I came from Nomadic communities , we keep livestock for one reason ” source of living for Us ” having working for carnivore conservation is not easy in this situation as human wildlife conflicts is common especially in this ands where livestock roam freely with wildlife, when people who encoutered this conflicts see you driving a project vechicle with a picture of leopards in the side , they must be curious and some asked sWhen we came, she just arrived from nearby bush collecting fire wood for her mum. Girls help their parents in many ways when they are home. She was excited and we started getting her beads out. In samburu culture, beads are part of us and for girl like Neema warriors give out to boy friend and in her age she is already someone’s wife, she is very Lucky we met up with her. Owls are known as bad omen from many cultures but for her it is a luck to get to go to school.
Neema is Now in grade one at lentile hills Acadamy Doldol, When I posted about her story with Owl many local senior elders advised me for her to undergo rituals to cleanse herself with bad omen from Owls ,I ignored and I kept believing that she is a heroine for conservation, our cultures are beautiful but some phrases can hinder girls like Neema to go to school, She was to be married and Letoluai Ambrose saved through photography and power of social media where she got support from well wishers
